Best crops to sow direct

Root crops like carrots and radishes resent being moved, so always go in direct; quick salad leaves and many peas and beans are sown straight out too. Several are among our quickest fast-growing vegetables.

How to sow direct

Prepare a fine, crumbly seedbed, sow thinly along a shallow drill at the right depth, and keep the soil moist until the seedlings appear. Thin them to the right spacing as they grow, and sow little and often for a continuous harvest.
